County Athletics 2019

The St Francis Credit Union Clare Community Games County Athletic Finals were staged on Sunday 9th June in O’Sullivan Pk, Lees Rd. The weather was very unfavourable for most of the day but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the children. The standard was very high with some very close finishes. The first in each event now go forward to represent Clare in the National Finals in U.L. 16th – 18th August.

Prior to the official opening there was a very colourful parade of all athletes in their area colours led by a lone piper. Chairperson Paula Byrne O’Connell welcomed all to the finals. She thanked everyone involved in the athletics the best of luck. She thanked all involved with the games Sponsors, Supporters, Parents, Area Committees without whom Community Games would not survive.

Cathal Crowe newly elected Mayor of Clare on his first official function said what a better event to start with. He said it was lovely to see all areas in their colour in the parade. He said Clare County Council have long been funding partners to Clare Community Games and he is sure it will continue into the future. He congratulated all the competitors, Committee and Officials and wished them well.

Vincent Guilfoyle representing St Francis Credit Union said they are delighted to be main sponsors of Clare Community Games for the past three years and will continue at least for another year. He wished all the participants, their parents, committee and officials a great finals. Also in attendance during the day to lend support and present medals Mayor of Ennis Claire Colleran Molloy, Mr Billy Saunderson International Police Association, Councillor Mary Howard.

The Pledge was read in Irish by Amelie Malice and in English by Caoimhe Byrne O’Connell. The Torch Bearer was Ella Dillon. Many thanks to Mary Phelan, County PRO, for providing comprehensive results.
