CLARE COMMUNITY GAMES

County Athletics 2021

The St Francis Credit Union supported County Athletic Finals were staged this year in John O’Sullivan Park, Lees Road on Sunday 15th August. It was a scaled down event compared to former years, with only one competitor from each area in each event and no relays. All other track events except the U8 80m were held including the hurdles. The field events Long Puck, Long Jump, Shot Putt, High Jump, Ball Throw, Javelin & Discus also took place. The winners in all these events have qualified for the Munster Regional Athletics on 18th September, Technology University Cork.

There was an official opening ceremony at 10am with some invited guests including Cllr PJ Ryan (Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council). Cecilia O’Sullivan (President of Clare Community Games), led one minute's applause in memory of the late Rose Meakins who died on 6th April 2020. Rose was heavily involved in Clare Community Games for over forty years.  Her husband Graham and son Stuart were present at this county athletics finals.

president's address - cecilia o'sullivan

I extend a very warm welcome on behalf of St. Francis Credit Union Clare Community Games to all the young competitors participating to-day, as well as their managers and parents from the different Areas to our fiftieth County Athletic Finals.

I would like to commend the Area Committees around the County for the wonderful dedication, dynamism and commitment in developing and promoting the Community Games at local level, which now embraces almost every Parish in the County.

COVID-19 has disrupted many sporting events including the Community Games this year. However, the County Athletic Finals thankfully is going ahead for 2021. This has always been the highlight of the Games’ activities and today is no exception with young people from twenty-four Areas competing. The atmosphere of the occasion proclaims more clearly than any words could, the value of the mission of Community Games.

It is impossible to calculate the debt that is owned to the countless men and women throughout the County, who have given generously of their time and energy to the Games over the years to foster and encourage the young people of Clare. To all those volunteers who have helped to run off the Games I say a special thank you. In particular I would like to acknowledge the remarkable 40 years contribution of Rose Meakins who sadly passed away and who was an invaluable part of the Community Games family. In addition I would like to pass on my condolences to anyone else in Community Games who had bereavements over the last year. “Ar dheis De go raibh a anam”.

I want to pay a special welcome and thanks to our main Sponsor St Francis Credit Union whose support and assistance has enabled us to bring the spirit of Community Games into every Parish in County Clare. Many organisations contributed to the success of the Athletic Finals, and in addition we want to thank our various sponsors over the years, and in particular the continued support given by Clare County Council and Clare Sports Partnership.

We are deeply indebted to the Officials of the Clare Athletic Association of Ireland and the Athletic Clubs without whose assistance and expertise we could not run off our Athletic Finals.
I would like to thank the Ennis Town Council and Staff at “John O’Sullivan Park” for their invaluable help and assistance.

Over the years there has been thousands of young who brought honour and pride to their Community and County since the Games in Clare first started in 1971. I wish all the participants the best of luck in their endeavour to-day. Congratulations on reaching the County Finals. I hope that you enjoy yourselves, make new friends, have fun and leave “John O’Sullivan Park” with happy memories that will stay with you throughout your lives.

Cecilia O’Sullivan, President

“Victory is in having done your best. If you’ve done your best, you’ve won”.
